A precise vocabulary for separating three things people routinely conflate: vision (the state of the world/product you want to reach), strategy (an opinionated path to that vision), and execution. The load-bearing test: a genuine strategy must be controversial enough that a reasonable person could disagree with it — otherwise you're only competing on raw execution. Use when writing or pressure-testing a strategy document.
Origin
Mosseri offers this as his working definitions when asked where human brains stay valuable as AI eats the product life cycle, arguing vision and strategy are where leaders will spend more of their cycles and execution less.
Core principles
- 01Vision = an articulation of the state of the product/world you want to reach
- 02Strategy = an opinionated path to achieve that vision
- 03A strategy that no reasonable person could disagree with is not a strategy — it's a bet on out-executing everyone
How to run it
- 1
Articulate the vision
State the destination: the world or state of the product you want to get to.
- 2
Choose an opinionated path
Define the strategy as a specific, opinionated route to that vision — not a menu of options.
- 3
Apply the controversy test
Check that a reasonable person could disagree with the strategy. If nobody could reasonably object, it's too generic and you're just betting on execution.
Pro tip A strategy can't be graded 'be the best' or 'be amazing' — those aren't strategies, they're aspirations.
Watch out A non-controversial strategy is one the competition already expects you to make.
In the wild
Mosseri notes you're not asking an AI to invent strategy anytime soon; if you use it, it's within bounds you set — goal, vision, constraints, budget — which looks more like management than delegation.
→ Human judgment stays the source of the opinionated path; AI critiques within constraints.
Common mistakes
Confusing a vision statement for a strategy
Describing the destination ('be the best') is vision-flavored aspiration, not an opinionated, disagreeable path.
Is it for you?
Best for
Founders and product leaders drafting or reviewing a strategy that needs to be more than a mission statement
Not ideal for
Pure-execution contexts where the path is already agreed and only delivery remains
