Rather than committing to a single go-to-market bet up front, Benioff runs many tactics simultaneously and watches for the one that produces disproportionate traction. Once a tactic works, it graduates into the core strategy and gets fuel. It reframes launch and growth as a search problem, not a planning problem.

Origin

Benioff's own operating method across 25 years at Salesforce, articulated here around the Agentforce launch; echoes the 'throw everything against the wall' folk expression he explicitly names.

Core principles

  • 01You don't know in advance which lever matters most, so test many at once
  • 02Experimentation and humility beat conviction — 'we can't be too arrogant'
  • 03A tactic that works gets promoted to strategy and gets resources
  • 04Comedians (Chris Rock) and product launches share the same test-in-clubs-before-the-special logic

How to run it

  1. 1

Pick the one bet to go all-in on

Choose a single product or outcome to obsess over (Agentforce) and orient the whole company and conference around it, so all experiments serve one goal.

Pro tip Benioff turned his entire Dreamforce conference into a single-topic event to force focus.

  2. 2

    Launch many tactics in parallel

Simultaneously run celebrity ads, a live public demo (help.salesforce.com), sales enablement, competitive positioning, and distribution expansion — many shots, not one.

Pro tip Post work-in-progress publicly (he put the ads on Twitter) to harvest feedback before committing.

Watch out Don't over-invest in any single tactic before you have signal it works.

  3. 3

    Watch for what sticks

Observe which tactic produces the 'light switch' moment — viral pull, customer excitement, measurable conversion — treating results as data, not vibes.

Watch out Arrogance about which tactic will win blinds you to the one that actually does.

  4. 4

Promote the winner to strategy and fuel it

Take the tactic that worked and scale it as the core strategy — reallocate people, budget, and distribution behind it (e.g. hiring 1,000-2,000 account executives for the winning motion).

In the wild

Agentforce launch experimentation

For Agentforce, Benioff simultaneously ran a Matthew McConaughey/Woody Harrelson ad campaign tested live on Twitter, a public demo at help.salesforce.com, aggressive anti-Microsoft-Copilot positioning, sales-team training, and a plan to hire 1,000-2,000 account executives — all to find which tactic would flip the customer 'light switch'.

He treats the search as ongoing, planning to scale whichever tactic proves most important into the launch strategy.

Common mistakes

Betting on one tactic with certainty

Saying 'this is the one thing that will definitely work' collapses your option space; Benioff warns that using words like that means 'you're gonna completely implode and fail'.

Skipping the testing phase

Like a comedian who goes straight to the Netflix special without testing jokes in clubs, founders who don't experiment first ship the wrong bet at scale.

Is it for you?

Best for

Founders and growth leaders launching a new product who don't yet know their winning go-to-market channel

Not ideal for

Situations demanding a single irreversible high-cost commitment where parallel experimentation is impossible or unsafe
