Paying Off Emotional Debt

Complete stored stress cycles through the body so allostatic load doesn't compound into crisis

A three-stage process for releasing accumulated, unprocessed stress — 'emotional debt' — that gets stored in the body as allostatic load when a stress mobilization cycle isn't completed with downshifting. Left unpaid, it creates nervous-system fragility, disproportionate reactivity, and eventually health crises, exactly like unpaid technical debt in a codebase. The remedy is somatic (body-based), not purely intellectual: build awareness, build self-regulation, then welcome and complete stored emotions.

Origin

Jonny Miller's framing of allostatic load as 'emotional debt.' Draws on somatic-trauma lineage he cites explicitly: Bessel van der Kolk ('The Body Keeps the Score'), Peter Levine ('Waking the Tiger,' the mobilization-reflex and 'issues in the tissues' idea), Damasio's 'somatic marker,' and modalities Somatic Experiencing and Hakomi. Informed by his interviews with 260 leaders.

Core principles

  • 01An incomplete stress mobilization cycle is stored as allostatic load ('emotional debt')
  • 02Like technical debt, some is fine and even necessary early — but unpaid it compounds into fragility and crisis
  • 03Talk alone doesn't discharge it; the stored charge must be felt through the body to complete
  • 04A felt sense of safety is the precondition for going into buffered emotions without being overwhelmed

How to run it

  1. 1

    Cultivate interoception

First become aware that the tension and stored emotion exist by tuning into bodily sensations (via APE, NSDR, body scans).

Pro tip You can't pay off debt you can't detect; awareness is the entry point.

  2. 2

    Build self-regulation

Develop reliable downshifting practices (exhale-dominant breathing, grounding) so that when buffered emotions surface you can calm and ground rather than get overwhelmed.

Pro tip Know your reactivity pattern — freeze/withdraw/shut-down versus fight/attack/get-bigger — so you can recognize and interrupt it.

Watch out Acting or deciding from a reactive state produces bad outcomes; downshift to safety first, then have the conversation or make the call.

  3. 3

    Practice emotional fluidity

Create conditions to welcome the full spectrum of emotions as they arise, following the bodily sensation (the 'somatic marker') and letting the original emotion complete.

Pro tip A somatic practitioner or therapist (Somatic Experiencing, Hakomi) accelerates this and provides the safety container.

Watch out Purely intellectual talk therapy that never connects insight to the correlating body sensation doesn't reach the root of the stored charge.

In the wild

Breathwork releasing stored grief

Over several hundred breathwork journeys in Bali, Jonny entered altered states where memories from 5-10 years earlier surfaced and his body released stored anger, sadness, grief, and shame held in his pelvis.

He emerged 'a completely different human,' released long-held tension, and even his voice dropped in pitch and changed resonance.

The $100k burnout

In his research interviewing leaders who had experienced burnout, the median estimated cost to their startup or business was $100,000, driven by second- and third-order effects like talent attrition, lost productivity, and poor decisions in the run-up.

Reframes unpaid emotional debt as a concrete bottom-line liability, not just a personal wellness issue.

Common mistakes

Relying on substances to downshift

Needing wine, CBD, or another external substance to relax at the end of a day is itself a sign you've crossed an emotional-debt threshold and your nervous system has lost the capacity to downshift on its own.

Buffering without recovery

Suppressing intense emotions to get through a meeting is a useful skill, but skipping the spaciousness afterward to feel what surfaced just adds to the debt over time.

Talk therapy with no body component

Understanding a past event in precise detail without connecting it to its somatic marker leaves the stored charge in place.

Is it for you?

Best for

High-functioning people in Silicon Valley-type roles who can't downshift without a substance and sense they've stored years of unprocessed stress

Not ideal for

Someone seeking a quick tactical fix for a single stressful moment; this is deeper, guided, ongoing work

when our nervous system experiences stress, there's what's known as a mobilization cycle. And if that cycle isn't completed... that gets stored in the body…
