Fadell's answer to the question 'what is worth building?' is a two-part test: start from a real, often habituated pain, then check whether a new enabling technology has just emerged that can solve that pain in a fundamentally different way. When both align, you can revolutionize a space rather than merely evolve it. This is his stated origin method for the iPod, iPhone, and Nest.

How to run it

    Locate a real or emerging pain

    Identify a pain people have right now, or one you can see on the horizon coming soon. Prefer pains that have been habituated — where an old product gave 'enough of a painkiller' that people tolerated a lingering problem for years.

    Pro tip Look for products that evolved but never revolutionized — the pain is still baked in from a limitation at the time of original creation.

    Find the newly-arrived enabling technology

    Ask whether a new technology has just come to light that can solve that pain differently. For Nest it was AI to learn patterns; for the iPhone keyboard it was multi-touch plus fast-enough processors; for the iPod it was portable mass storage, lithium-polymer cells, ARM chips, and digital music all arriving at once.

    Pro tip Scan for multiple technologies 'just on the verge' converging simultaneously — that convergence is the signal.

    Bond the pain and the tech into a revolution

    Combine the habituated pain with the new technology to redefine the space, not just add a feature. Nest used AI-learning to kill thermostat programming while saving energy — justifying a price 5–6x higher.

    Reinvent the whole system, not just the device

    Redesign every adjacent piece: how it's installed, how it's bought, the services around it. The iPod was iPod plus iTunes plus the iTunes Music Store; Nest changed installation and purchase channel too.

    Watch out If you only build the one memorable piece and leave the surrounding system untouched, the innovation stalls.

The Nest Learning Thermostat

Fadell identified a habituated pain: 50% of an energy bill went to heating and cooling through an interface people hated and never used, yet just paid the bill. Programmable thermostats existed but were 'programming of a VCR' that nobody used. The new tech was AI that could learn your patterns automatically. He bonded them, priced it at $249 (5–6x incumbents), and reinvented installation and purchase channel.

A thermostat that paid for itself in a year or two by saving $800–$1,200 annually, and became the best product in its space for a decade.

The iPod technology convergence

Fadell points to the iPod as multiple technologies arriving simultaneously: portable battery-operated mass storage, new lithium-prismatic-polymer cells, digital music/MP3s, and low-power ARM processors — all just becoming viable at once.

The convergence enabled a product category that, combined with iTunes and the music store, ultimately saved a near-bankrupt Apple.

Common mistakes

Starting from the technology instead of the pain

Fadell cites General Magic as the classic failure — 'we made the iPhone 15 years too early... we were just making the things that were really cool, but nobody needed it.' Cool tech without a real pain has no pull.

Building only the device and ignoring the system

Remembering the iPod but forgetting it required iTunes and the music store leads builders to ship one piece into a vacuum. The innovation lives in reinventing installation, purchase, and services around the product.
