A method for neutralizing the fears that block a big move. Limiting beliefs are most dangerous while they sit unnamed in the subconscious. Writing them all down strips them of scariness and converts each one from a nebulous fear into a concrete to-do item your conscious mind can attack like any other problem.

Origin

Graham Weaver's process, used to deconstruct the fears keeping students from pursuing their genie goals.

Core principles

  • 01A limiting belief is most powerful and dangerous when you don't even know you have it
  • 02Roughly 95% of thoughts are subconscious, which is where these beliefs operate
  • 03Naming a fear on paper immediately strips much of its power
  • 04A fear on paper becomes a to-do item; a to-do item is just an obstacle, and you've already overcome millions of obstacles

How to run it

  1. 1

    Dump every fear onto paper

For the goal you want, write down every limiting belief flooding your mind — 'I don't know how to start,' 'I have debt,' 'how would I get funding,' 'I don't even have a plan.'

Pro tip Get it all out without filtering — the volume itself is part of what's been silently paralyzing you.

  2. 2

Look at them in cold daylight

Read the written list. Seeing the beliefs explicitly on paper immediately reduces their scariness and power.

  3. 3

Translate each into a to-do item

Convert every fear into a concrete task. 'How would I fund this?' becomes 'design a plan to get funding for this' — a normal problem to be solved, not a nebulous dread.

Pro tip Remind yourself you've overcome millions of obstacles already; these are no different once they're on paper.

In the wild

Funding the Brazilian charity

For the charity idea, fears like 'how would I pay for myself,' 'I have business school debt,' and 'how would I get funding' were written down. On paper, 'how would I fund this' became a plan to design funding — a solvable to-do.

The fear stopped being an insurmountable barrier and became an ordinary obstacle to work through.

Common mistakes

Leaving fears in the subconscious

Unnamed limiting beliefs quietly steer you away from the thing you love without you ever confronting them. The danger is precisely that they remain unexamined.

Is it for you?

Best for

Anyone stalled on a big life or career change by a cloud of vague anxieties they haven't articulated.

Not ideal for

Situations where the obstacle is a genuine hard constraint (e.g. legal, medical) rather than a fear to be reframed.
