A virality method that rejects forcing users to share things they otherwise wouldn't. Instead, temporarily instrument the product to discover where users already organically share (e.g. screenshots), then staff those specific moments with design polish to amplify the behavior that's already happening.

Origin

Developed by a virality team Cheng helped spin up at Duolingo, which added temporary screenshot tracking to find sharing hotspots. He notes virality is hard to generate but Duolingo is a heavily-shared product.

Core principles

  • 01Generating virality from scratch is very hard; amplifying existing sharing is far more reliable.
  • 02Instrument to find the real hotspots rather than guessing where users share.
  • 03Lean into organic moments instead of nudging users to share things they don't want to.
  • 04This is a core-product investment, not just an experiment — but it connects to explore/exploit (find where sharing happens, then exploit it).

How to run it

  1. 1

    Temporarily track sharing behavior

Add screenshot (or share) tracking for a brief period to find the hotspots where users already capture and share moments.

Pro tip This is common practice and time-boxed — you don't leave it on permanently.

  2. 2

    Identify the organic share moments

Analyze the data to name the specific moments users share — and rule out ones they don't.

Pro tip At Duolingo: streak milestones and funny challenges were highly shared; advancing in the top-three leaderboard was not.

  3. 3

    Staff and polish those moments

Assign illustrators and animators to make the confirmed share moments delightful, amplifying the existing behavior.

Pro tip This can 5x-10x the sharing of moments users were already inclined to share.

Watch out Don't spend effort trying to force sharing of moments users don't naturally want to share.

In the wild

Duolingo screenshot hotspots

Duolingo added temporary screenshot tracking, found streak milestones and funny challenge moments were highly screenshotted, then staffed those moments with illustrators and animators to create delightful shareable experiences.

Amplified organic sharing 5-10x and drove meaningful growth.

Common mistakes

Trying to manufacture virality on the margins

Pushing users to share things they otherwise wouldn't fights human intuition and rarely works; amplify what's already organic instead.

Is it for you?

Best for

Growth/product teams on consumer products that already have some organic sharing behavior to amplify.

Not ideal for

Products with little to no organic sharing, where there are no existing hotspots to instrument.

we invested actually in some time to um essentially add screenshot tracking for like a brief period of time in the app just so we…

grab the moments where users are already organically screenshotting and make those much much much better

you can kind of 5x or 10x and and drive a lot of growth that way too
