Platform PM and Consumer PM Are Not One-Way Doors
Chu rejects the idea that platform and user-facing product management form a permanent either-or career choice. Consumer PMs learn from the platforms they use, platform PMs observe the range of experiences built on their canvas, and alternating between the two offers both long-cycle ecosystem work and fast user feedback.
- Neither product domain is inherently better
- Consumer teams experience good and bad internal or third-party platforms
- Platform teams learn from the universe of experiences their tools enable
- Platform work has much longer feedback cycles
- Oscillating between the domains can provide complementary experience
“I don't think it's either or. I don't think one is better than the other.”
“I think having both is actually the right goal, both experiences.”
